I am so, so sorry to hear about the passing of Barefoot.  I use his site all the time and never realized he was gone until now.  To me, who only knew him through the site, he was still there and, I  guess, continues to be there in the same way that I always knew him.

Regarding Barefoot Bob and his good works at www.barefootsworlds.net, especially http://www.barefootsworld.net/bftwrite.html

Something moved me to re-visit the "recovery pages" on Barefoot Bob's website today; I was ruminating over the passing of another AA member who became one of my mentors. The news that Bob Hardison passed away on January 31 was not what I'd hoped to find.

I'd communicated with Bob via e-mail a couple times shortly after he returned home from his Atlantic cruise. I doubt he ever knew how important he was in my early recovery from alcoholism; it began in 2003 and I found his website that fall.

Inspired by his work, I created www.route164.net

I will do anything I can to help keep Bob's website up and running. It's a fine example and great source of information and inspiration for folks like me. It's likely to save lives.

Let me know how I can help. It's the best way I can pay my respects to the man I never met, a man I respect. I wish to honor him. What can I do?

Best regards,

I am so sorry to learn of Bob's death.  We had exchanged a few emails over the past four years.  He was always such a big help to me when I was looking for something that pertained to AA history.  I was always so impressed by his web site and the amount of time that he had spent posting information, articles and history of AA and making it so user friendly.  I never told him that...I hope that he knows.  Will have to put a note to Bob in my God Box tonight.

I was on his site a few days ago and I emailed him a question ( I received your response back and was stunned).  I was gathering info to be ready to lead a Traditions workshop. I did find the info for which I was looking.  Sure hope that his web site will stay online for those who are searching out the history of AA.

In love and service,

Marlene

From Bob's Former Wife

June 21st, 2009

I wanted to share something about Barefoot to pass on to all of the many people who have visited this website, something few people know.  You see I was there when Barefoot attended his first AA meeting and I know the story of the handle "Barefoot" that was given him.  It started at the "Friendship Club" in Orange, CA. Feb 28, 1974.  He always took his shoes off whenever he got the chance, no matter where he was. One day one of the members said they should start calling him "Barefoot", so with his new sobriety came a new name. He has been "Barefoot Bob" ever since.

The greatest gift he gave me was, our children, Susan and Casey.  Susan was able to visit him in the Hospital before he died and she came to understand what he was all about and it helped them both to finally come to terms with their relationship.

His passing has left a hole in my heart but his legacy lives on and for that I am happy.

Love and peace

I happened upon Bobs website, when I was looking for a good comprehensive simple stupid dissertation on US history and the US Constitution.  Once I found Bobs site, I was hooked........for the past six years!!!!

His website is simply beautiful as well as informative.  Bob came across as a soul with much wisdom compiled with compassion and love.

Bob is now free as a bird in the company of God and great thinkers like himself.  His senses are no longer assaulted by the degeneracy and degradation that the world has become.

Lucky you Bob.  Stay well, looking forward to meeting you, at the time when I throw of my earthly, mudane shackles of flesh and become a free soul like you.

Hi: Barbara Bemis Ogden from the class of 1951 speaking. Seeing the article on the front page of the Casper paper, was very impressive, being on the front page...it was uniquely done, and I would say an unusual thing to be on the front page. That was great. Christine Robinson deserves a pat on the back for accomplishing an article like that....and anyone else who promoted it.  Especially, when generally now people must pay to have any information in; and story took it out of that realm. I did not know the story of Bob's life; and I'm sure many other classmates were glad to know of his abilities to reach others who needed him, just as I appreciated learning the information.

NC graduate helped others through his recovery

By Christine Robinson
Casper Star-Tribune staff-writer

He looked for his son in every city he visited.

Each new town, in each new phone book, he looked for Brett Hardison. More doors to knock, more wrong houses.

Robert Hardison, 76, searched for his first son for nearly 30 years.

His alcoholism made him lose Brett. But his recovery influenced hundreds if not thousands of people.

Bob was the connecting point in a community he built and nurtured through his Web site. Everywhere he traveled, he met and counseled people.

Memorials on his Web site credit him with saving lives. Some say he helped them become sober and stay there. Others say his spirituality was the only thing that kept them grounded during a turbulent time.

For 35 years, the man known to many as Barefoot Bob brought people into recovery and helped them conquer demons he knew too well.

"No matter what else happens...you've had a long term positive effect on this drunk." -- Bill, from a testimonial written on barefootsworld.net.

Many words are used to describe Bob: spiritual, dignified, a true man of the West, political, intelligent, adventurous and caring.

Friends said he was generous, driving hours to visit with someone who needed him, writing e-mail after e-mail of correspondence to those struggling with addiction.

He was a man who was on a first-name basis with God -- he called him Charlie -- and was also deeply committed to Native American spirituality.

Richard C. Green met Bob through barefootsworld.net, Bob's Web site. They talked mainly about his postings about America and the Constitution. He and Bob e-mailed multiple times and Bob visited Green and his wife in Connecticut.

"This was a man, this was a fellow, a person you could look at and say 'This is a man,' and that is unfortunately a rare commodity in today's world," Green said. "He never turned anyone down when someone needed to talk to him."

Even as Bob was dying of cancer, he still wanted to talk with people and share the journey of his death with those near him, said Andreas Braunlich, a close friend who is temporarily operating Bob's Web site.

Only weeks before he died, Bob told Braunlich to tell everyone this: "The old man is hanging in there and so can they. All we all have to do is not pick up that first drink."

Braunlich and others tried to connect Internet into Bob's hospice room so he could communicate within weeks of his death. Others came and held Alcoholics Anonymous meetings with him as he focused through the haze of morphine given to ease the pain.

"The biggest gift he gave me is what I am getting now, how one person can impact so many different people in so many different ways," Braunlich said.

"I am better for having known Bob and for reading all that he has passed on to me." -- Herb from Salt Spring Island, British Columbia

The Idaho resident spent only three of his 76 years in Wyoming, but even in that short time, he made an impression.

Graduating from Natrona County High School in 1951, Bob took charge of keeping the classmates organized on the Mustang Class of '51 Web site.

His last gathering in Casper was his 55th reunion in 2006.

Former classmate Marvin McKinley still remembers Bob as an adventurer. The two worked on the Gusher, Natrona County High School's newspaper.

McKinley, as well as other Class of '51 students, including Casper resident Pat Tripeny followed Bob's postings about his adventures.

After Bob began recovery, he married again, and had two more kids, Casey and Susan.

He worked and traveled, holding a nagging feeling of loss for the child he never knew because of the alcoholism he was working to defeat.

When his second son, Casey, was young, the two men took a summer to travel Lewis and Clark's journey down the Missouri River. They wore leather clothes, carried, pushed and paddled a canoe, living off the land and eating what they shot with black powder rifles.

It all started from one of Casey's math problems. When they went to the library to find an answer, Bob said, "let's just do it," recounted his younger brother Mike Hardison.

But in those many travels with his son, and subsequent trips on his motorcycle, trimaran and 1914 Model T, he looked for his first son.

If you asked him, who knows what he would say his motivation -- for the Web site and constant communication, for the time and commitment it took to sponsor hundreds of people through their own AA journeys. But perhaps it was because he knew what alcoholism could do. He knew what he had lost.

"Thank you Capt. Bob for all you have taught me. I thank the Almighty God for his life." -- Capt. Leon Raynor s/v Sally Bum Bum, Bermuda.

When Brett was two, his mother divorced Robert. Bob's alcoholism was too much to handle, Brett said. He would come by every year around Christmas time until Brett was eight. Then his mother moved, and the father and son didn't see each other again.

After Bob got sober, Feb. 28, 1974, he went looking for the son he had lost. Every town Bob visited he searched phone books for Brett Hardison. And he visited every address, just in case.

In 1995, Bob was in a town in California on his motorcycle, looking through another phone book.

There was a Hardison listing, and as he had countless times before, he found the house, hoping to find his son.

Brett was 35 then, an adult who hadn't seen his father since he was 8 years old.

Standing outside of his house with his wife and 9-month-old daughter, Brett saw an old man drive up on a motorcycle and take his helmet off.

"That's my dad," he thought.

The man walked up to him and asked if it was the Hardison residence.

"You're my dad," Brett said.

They talked, asked for forgiveness and gave forgiveness, and Bob knew that his first son, who he had never really known, was OK.

Then Bob added Brett to the ever-growing list of people he talked with, visited and loved.

His purpose in life, he wrote, was, "To carry this message of love and peace into the world the best way I know how, through the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous."

And so he continued, until his dying day, to reach out to people and bring them hope through his healing.

Email to Christine, March 9th, 2009

Christine,

Thank you very much!  I was excited to read your article and it exceeded my hopes.  A friend of mine summed it up as follows and I agree completely:

"The story is delightful.  It hits in some way or another on all of Bob's good points and only tangentially on some of the bad.  Second, the story is exceedingly well written.  It is neither maudlin nor idolatrous.  It is just plain Bob." - Tim H.

You really did a great job and I am sure that Bob would have liked it and that his many friends will as much as I do.

When I copy the article into Bob's website memorial page, I would like to do it properly.  Could you please email me the text I need to add so that you and your newspaper are properly linked and credited?  It would be a big help!

Thanks again and have a great day,

Andreas,

Thank you for the kind e-mail. It's hard to capture a person with a life as full as Bob's, so I am glad I could at least touch on some of it. Copied below is the text. I'm really not a computer person, so I don't know if this is the best format for you or not.

Also below is the illustration done by Wes Watson. Or you could link to www.trib.com

I hope this helps, if you were hoping for something different, let me know and I will ask someone around the office.

Thanks again for all your help,

Andreas & Maureen:

Every so often I download the pictures from my camera and review/categorize them. A sudden wave of loss and gratitude enveloped me when I first saw these. They include the last AA meeting I attended with Barefoot Bob. I have compressed them so they won't hang up your e-mail server (hopefully). The full-sized 8-Megapixel originals have been retained intact on my laptop and are available upon request to anyone desiring a copy. The world seems to be a much smaller... and larger place lately. I hope Bob remembers my request and finds me a good old-fashioned "smoking" meeting before I get there. Somehow,.. it doesn't feel like a REAL meeting if I don't walk out with my eyes burning out of my skull.

Andreas,

I read of Bob's passing today and he will be missed. I first came across his sight when I moved to Mexico back in 1998. I was five years sober and did not speak any Spanish when I moved there. I moved there to follow a dream of owning an ATV rental company in Rocky Point, Sonora. I certainly related well to Bob's sense of adventure and zest for life in sobriety. It was great to have someone to exchange emails with and talk about recovery over the internet. Bob's postings have been a great source of inspiration and information to me through the years.

Sincerely,

As someone who spent many years getting sober I want to extend my deepest heartfelt gratitude to Bob and my sadness at his passing. He was one of the AA member's who taught me the true nature and value of the program and helped me to finally discover that much needed spiritual experience. Love and best wishes to you Bob, wherever you are - you're name lives on in the preservation of the true message of AA and the future drunks who come to know both sobriety and serenity.

With heart-felt sympathy I am very sorry to hear of our loss. I wondered onto Bob's website a while ago and have shared it with many in the fellowship. I have found BB p.568(570), Appendix II, Spiritual Experience  "With few exceptions our members find that they have tapped an unsuspected inner resource which they presently identify with their own conception of a Power greater than themselves." Bob has helped me and many more on our journey.  His website is loaded with an unbelievable amount of knowledge and wisdom I hope his website will be maintained. I look forward to seeing him at the meetings in the sky.

Sincerely,

February 25th, 2008

It is my own personal opinion that Barefoot Bob was a very rare, and special; sort of person. He was most certainly a ‘true American Patriot’ which are actually rare. Many People make that claim, but few actually carry the torch. Barefoot was certainly one of the few that carried the torch of freedom, and liberty proudly, and has earned my utmost respect for his contributions.

I never meet this true American Patriot (Barefoot) face to face but would have been greatly honored to have had the privilege. I know of him through his Web Site Barefoot’s World. I could not tell you how many times I have visited that site as a source of “Enlightenment” which seemed to be the main theme and lesson of his pages. “People must enlighten (educate) themselves” in order to avoid being abused, which aligns with the words of a well known book known as the Holy Bible in which I firmly believe.

“Enlightenment” is the key to freedom, and liberty which “all People” seem to desire. Unfortunately it seems that few People are willing to pay the price of their own liberty and freedom (Which is time and effort). The cost of the key to freedom and liberty is never ending vigilance to seek the ‘Truth” and Enlighten themselves. It seems that vast majority of People prefer ‘entertainment over the animating contest of enlightenment’ which Barefoot offered freely to those that would look.

Over the course of twenty plus years of my ‘personal endeavor to enlighten myself’ I have encountered many sources of educational and enlightening materials. Many of these sources of educational, and enlightening materials I have encountered over the years proclaimed themselves to be loyal, true, American Patriot’s, serving the American People, and our system of governance, and placed themselves on pedestals next to Barefoot, and what he offered. The primary difference between them and Barefoot was that the material they offered was offered to those willing, and able to pay a monetary price, while Barefoot offered the same information free.

It is my own opinion that none of those sources even held a candle in comparison to the bright beacon of “truth” that Barefoot found in his heart to offer freely. Barefoot served his countrymen well, and profit was not his motive. In sort over the years I have encountered many so called Patriots whose motives appear to be profit, and self esteem, and not the selfless desire to rekindle the flames of freedom and liberty in America. My own belief is that Barefoot serves the same “Creator” that I attempt to serve. I am certain that the “Great Legislature of this Universe” was well prepared to accept Barefoot, into his realm and that Barefoot now holds a ‘very high’ position of honor and respect in that realm.

I knew Bob for about five years.  He always claimed to be self-educated, which was not entirely true, but could carry on a conversation with any college professor on an equal footing; I know that because I was a college professor for nearly forty years and had many chats with him. Bob never could figure out why someone with my education did not know as much about the Constitution as he did; knowledge of our country's history was basic to Bob, like simple mathematics and grammar.

Barefoot Bob was one of the most service oriented individuals it has ever been my pleasure to know.  I never knew him to refuse to take a minute to help out someone who was a bit less fortunate than he was.

Bob and I agreed occasionally and disagreed the rest of the time, mainly about politics.  Probably he was more of a Westerner than I am because of his conservatism. . . .or maybe he was more of a Libertarian.  Probably it was Hardisonism.  I only got him mad one time and that was when I remarked I had been on his web site and noticed he was backing Paul Ron for President.  As he was correcting me (Ron Paul!) he noticed a wry smile on my face and immediately started chuckling himself.

Bob loved a good joke, especially one that employed some sort of language trick, like strange puns.  I think his ability to field outrageous jokes came from his voracious reading habits.  It was a lot easier to figure out what he had read than what he had not read.

Barefoot called God, Charlie.  I never knew why but it always made sense that this man was on a first name basis with his god.  When Bob entered a room, most of the conversation stopped until he was seated.  He enjoyed an enormous amount of respect no matter where he went.

Hi Andreas,

I wrote to you 15/16 February when I visited the site and saw that Bob had died. Thanks for your reply. I can see that this is busy time for you so I wont take too much of it. I though I would send you this. It's my first email exchange with Bob. I was deep in denial of my own Alcoholism and used Alanon to keep me sober whilst I tried to "cure" her [his wife]. I stopped drinking April 6th, a couple of months before this exchange. Exposed to the truth about the disease it didn't take me long to figure out I had it too. Bob and I shared a number of mails over the last few years and as I came to terms with my own alcoholism I have begun one day at a time to find sobriety. The obsession to drink has dissipated by the grace of God leaving me free to heal emotionally, to grow spiritually and to find out more about love, unconditional love, and to practice it too,

Thanks

Love to you,

Mike

Mike's First Email Message to Bob - July 9th, 2005:

I came across your site whilst surfing, looking for information on AA and Alanon. My wife is suffering from Alcoholism and has been for a few years. I've only just realized how sick I have become and I have started attending Alanon in order to effect a recovery. I'm stuck on step one intellectually and emotionally but I do have a little hope where before there was deep despair. I find your site very soothing.

Thanks,

Mike X

Bob's Reply - July 9th, 2005:

Hello, Mike....

to help you with the difference between religion and spirituality I suggest you read the page the describes my own battle...

http://www.barefootsworld.net/aareligionspirituality.html

And the problem is not one of external unmanageability, but the internal unmanageability of our emotions and mental processes...  When we look at the reality of alcoholism, the problem is in the mind (although genetic metabolic differences enter into the problem also) and when we straighten out the spiritual, the mental and physical problems straighten out too.

There is nothing you can do to manage or change the alcoholism of another, the only thing you can do is change your thinking about it... and Alanon will help you release them to whatever is their future and help you to better yours.

Love and Peace,

Barefoot

I've been given this gift now for over twenty years and routinely referenced Bob's website in those early years.

Bob more than gave to me what I couldn't give to myself, and he will be sorely missed.

God Bless and may may he rest in Peace and enjoy the ultimate blessings with Our Lord Jesus Christ.

I came across Bob's rendition of The Serenity Prayer set to the music of Massanet during August of 2007.  I was reading his thoughts on the prayer and finding The Great Reality deep inside.  It was then that the Miracle happened and I found myself in the presence of a Higher Power I never knew existed.  I have remained sober for almost two years and credit Barefoot Bob for providing me with the spiritual tools to find a better way of life.  He will be deeply missed.

I am early in sobriety , 1/2 years.  I found Bob's pages to be very helpful in understanding the program.  He took the 12th step to a whole other level.  Who knows how many of us he has help with his pages.  Million no doubt.  He gave back to anyone who visited his website.

Rest in peace, I know you will

Just a short note to offer my condolence to Bob's family and to tell you one and all that Bob understood what Pass It On meant!

I am better for having known Bob and for reading all that he has passed on to me.

In whatever way you can, in whatever time you have left here, and with love pass it on, eh? ...and keep coming back...

Gracias a Dios.

This was taken Sept 1998 at the Revelstoke BC roundup. Barefoot and I had been communicating via email for about 4 years prior to this. We linked to each others sobriety sites but had never met f2f. We went to this roundup to meet a good friend of ours from Salmon Arm BC. I was sitting on Friday night listening  to the speaker and this old grizzled fart sits down next to me. Never gave it too much thought till he placed his big book down on the table and I read the name, Barefoot Bob written on the page ends. I shook his hand and he said Barefoot Bob is my name and I said Nugget is mine. We all spent the weekend together till he rode off on his bike one way and I drove off the other way.

Barefoot was every bit of what I expected him to be, a testimony of sobriety.

Save a seat in that meeting in the sky Barefoot for me. Never known when I might sit down beside you and we meet again.

Just made one of my infrequent visits to the site and read that Bob had passed away. I am in London, England. I have been sober nearly five years. In my early days I was quite strung out and searched the net to seek help and support. I know my Higher Power clicked me to Bob's site. I used the sobriety counter a lot in my first year and found great comfort in all the amazing information he had posted. We exchanged a few emails over those few years, I still have them. All my emails around the fellowship are in a folder called Love. Bob definitely showed that to me unconditionally for which I am grateful. He's now at the last line of the Step 11 prayer. Rest in peace Bob.

Thanks from

Mike.

To Whom It May Concern, my full name is James Clair, Brown (AKA Jimmy Freeman founder of the ‘American People’s Party’.) I sojourn at 4132 Ritchfield Dr. Lincolnton, North Carolina 28092. My phone number is 704-240-8224. My E-mail address is jim_ki4raw@hotmail.com.

In my humble opinion Mr. Bob Hardison (Barefoot) was a ‘true American Patriot’ which is rare, and I am heart broken and devastated to hear that he has passed. I am sure that the great Creator of the Universe has blessed him and made a warm welcome to him as he passed through the pearly gates and straight into his place in heaven. I am very confident that our Creator has prepared Barefoot a special place in heaven for wise men. ‘We was in fact a very wise man in world overran by fools’.

I spent years in the far North of Canada giving service to my people.  It was in the early 90s that I met the man who called me brother, but only ever through the internet. We tried, often, to meet in person, but Creator would not have it so, yet.

The long nights in fly-ins, were times he would counsel, support and encourage me.  His life was one of service, and he knew some of my struggles as I sacrificed everything to give service to my people.  He followed me from fly-in to fly-in through the many years and each week I would receive an email unless he was on his way on another wonderful adventure.  I followed him on his Golden Wing, his travels to Alaska, his catamaran trip and knew he was about to build his Model-T car and be off again.

Knowing Bob, he is joyfully off on this new adventure and though my mortal Self will miss him, I know his counsel will continue. He was a blessing here on this earth and I know I will feel his blessings through the rest of my years.  Such a man... collecting feathers and lonely souls as he travelled.

We met due to a pipe I sent up to Alaska to work with troubled youth.  That pipe has kept us connected all these years and I have no doubt that each butterfly I meet from now on will be one I can whisper to and have it whisper back.

May your moccasins walk your next adventures with the same spirit of love, brother.

Always,

Carol Desjarlais

Barefoot sure did instill a positive impression on me.

I remember swapping emails at port when he was sailing the open seas.  I simply loved how he showed his enthusiasm for a life filled with sobriety and peace of mind.  He certainly did live a life filled with happiness, joy, and freedom.

Thank you Barefoot for being a powerful example and leading the way.  I wish you well as you journey onward.

I know he will be missed but not forgotten; his work lives on in us and will be passed on to others for generations to come.  Thank you.

To all that knew and loved Barefoot:

I have learned much from not only what is posted on AA history but his other posts too.  Thank You B. B.  Remember he is still alive in all of you, when you think of him. I am sure he'd tell you not to grieve for him but rather to get on with your lives, and remember the good times.

His spirit is now free,

I'm very sad to hear of Bob's passing...

I knew he was sick... but was hoping he would pull through.  He touched my life and I was blessed to meet him last summer... and ride with him to some meetings.

We went to the Powwow in Inchelieum together and we spent a few days camping and talking AA His advice to me was to "stay in the moment".

I'll never forget the time we had,

I have been using bearfootsworld.net as a reference site for information about the Constitution of the Unites States.  Bearfootsworld.net is a wonderful resource, intelligently constructed, and very useful. Indeed, it is the only place where some ancient material, in an easily accessible form, is available! My deep appreciation goes to Bob for his hard work constructing and maintaining the site, and for his incomparable dedication at keeping the light of liberty alive.

Dear Andreas,

Only six months in my recovery, I have browsed Bob's site numerous times. I have found courage, inspiration, comfort, advice and, above all, a treasure of things to think about. What Bob left behind helps me to grow, and to give my recovery a chance to be permanent. Perhaps, one day, I will meet this man who has touched me so thoroughly and be able to thank him in person. I only hope that there are many years of sobriety in between still, and that I can continue to live them with a love of life, as Bob inspires us to do.

Hi Andreas,

My name is Randy, I am a recovering Alcoholic, a friend of Bob's and served on the online 12 step committee that Bob was also a member of, The Stepper's as we refer to ourselves. The Stepper's is a committee of some 35 alkies, from around the world, who answer the urgent emails from the still suffering alcoholics around the world. Bob was a faithful member and devoted serviceman of this committee. He was quick to send a message of hope to those who still suffered, and an uplifting note to any who wrote in about a loved one with an alcohol problem. We, on this committee, will sorely miss Bob. And, I am a bit envious of his soaring into the presence of the God of his understanding.

Bob,

Thank you so much for helping to keep the doors open, so that this miserable drunk would have a chance at recovery. Had it not been for folks like you, insuring the continuance of the Traditions, AA would have gone the way of the Washingtonian's did so long before us.

Thanks,

Randy D.

Dear Andreas,

We were saddened to hear of Bob's passing and would like to convey to you and his friends and family our commiserations. Bob was an active Member of our Campaign for Restoration and Universal Adoption of Constitutional Common Law Trial by Jury.

Bob ran an interesting website. It was a significant expression of one man's views and makes a statement of true value to inspire others. Perhaps you will consider keeping it up.

With our best wishes to all Bob's family, friends and associates,

Yours sincerely,

Barefoot Bob...and MORE!

Andreas,

Wife and I had the pleasure of having Barefoot swing by and stay for a few days when we lived in Victorville, Ca. After the 2nd day, we couldn't help notice that he hadn't bathed or showered since he showed up, and was wearing the same clothes he had on when he arrived. I casually let him know (once again) that he was welcome to use the facilities to tidy up a bit. He thanked us and went back out to the Gold Wing and grabbed a duffle bag out of his small trailer and brought it in. My wife Terri had to leave for some reason and the next thing I saw was a NAKED Barefoot Windwalker standing in the kitchen changing his clothes. He said something along the lines that he really didn't need a shower that day but probably should put some clean clothes on. What a guy...!

He and his wife were of great help to me.  Give his family my condolences. Thank you for letting all the people know.  What is so amazing is no matter how sick he seems have been he still tried to be there for all of us that knew the sweet man.  He never told me he was so sick. I'm sorry for your loss thanks for getting back to me so soon in your time of grief.

Photos from Bob's son, Bret Hardison

This first picture is my 4 mo. old Hayley-Rose, my dad And I the day Bob showed up at our door.  After close to 30 years of traveling around the states looking for me he finally found my family and I in Ventura Ca.(My wife Christine took the picture).

This 2nd picture is Bob and his 3 sons at the Idaho ranch, summer of 1999.

The 3rd picture is the best, my half brother Casey my dad and I camping out at the old ranch in Montana.  I had been reacquainted with my dad for 8 months and just met Casey and the rest of the Hardisons at the Idaho ranch a couple of days earlier. I know it meant the world to my dad to finally camp with the two of us at the site where he grew up and was such a special place to him, Casey too.

Pictures 4&5 are of my dad and my two daughters, Hayley-Rose age 9 and Hannah age 6 when he was driving the Model T around the country. These 2 pictures taken in Calif. late August 2007.

My dad was a good man and I love him for that. He had more adventures in his life than 10 men and his last adventure is his grandest.

Respectfully his son,

In Memory of Barefoot

If I knew what to say, I would have said it by now

If I knew what to do, I would do it somehow

Prayers for you and Bob's family to God I now send

He is the One who can help your heart to mend

I am not going to lie, and say I know how you feel,

Each of us deals with loss differently, its so surreal

If there is anything I can do, name it, it will be done

You always treat others like they are number one

I offer back to you what you have always given others so freely

You have helped others to get through a lot of calamity

I feel helpless right now, for I wish I had a magic cure

If there is anything I can do, I will do it for sure

Some things do not make any sense, no matter how at it we look

Every thing happens for a reason, just like it says in The Big Book

However, just as I am sure you do not, neither do I

Understand why Barefoot Bob has gone to the by and by

Sometimes it is not, for us to understand

If there is any way that I can help, I will lend you my hands

If there is anything I can do, name it, it will be done

You treat everyone else like they are number one

I offer back to you what you have always given others so freely

You have helped others to get through a lot of calamity

I feel helpless right now, for I wish I had a magic cure

If there is anything I can do, I will do it for sure

I wish I knew the exact right words, to offer you some hope

I do not know what to do, to help you through this, to cope

You have always cared for others, and I care about you

Your experience, strength, and hope always shines through

To Him I give thanks for that, and I just wanted to say

If there is anything big or small, I will help in any way

If there is anything I can do, name it, it will be done

You treat everyone else like they are number one

I offer back to you what you have always given others so freely

You have helped others to get through a lot of calamity

I feel helpless right now, for I wish I had a magic cure

If there is anything I can do, I will do it for sure

Lieber Andreas,

es würde mich freuen, wenn Du das Folgende bei der Feier vorlesen
würdest:

I'm Not Here

Don't stand by my grave and weep
for I'm not there, I do not sleep
I am thousand winds that blow
I am the diamonds glint on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn's rain

When you awaken in morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circle flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night
Do not stand on my grave and cry
I am not there, I did not die.

Farewell my friend, we'll see us in the Big Meeting.

With AA love

Here are some of the comments that I received concerning Bob in his last week with us.  I thought you might want to have them to know how some of his old classmates felt.  He was a wonderful guy and my only regrets are, I wished I had the chance to have gotten to know him better.

God Bless you and yours

Marvin McKinley

[Editorial note: All of the messages below came in a single email from Marvin - thanks for all your help, Marvin!]

From Sharon & Larry Barnett:  Thank you, Marvin.  Your message came through intact. I am saddened to get the news about Bob Hardison.  I will pray for his peace and comfort.  Thanks, Barb Bemis Ogden

From Patrica Frost Mosher: Thank you for relaying this sad news and for taking the time to forward it to everyone. Pat

Marvin, thanks so much for notifying all of us about Bob's illness.  I am truly sorry to hear that this is happening to him.  He has worked so diligently to keep up the NCHS website for us, and keep everyone informed about the class members. We really appreciate that.  He is a special person, and will be in our prayers. -- Cora Lee (Hastings) Forman

Dear Marvin..................Thanks for your email.  I am dumbstruck and heart sick.  Bob is such a force of life and it is hard to believe this news though it did pass my mind when he wrote of his terrible heartaches earlier last year.  I dismissed the thought of cancer.  He has such a zest for life.  So many of my friends are dying..............guess we are at that age.  love, Nancy Lubnau Stewart

Thank you Marvin for letting us all know about Bob.  How sad if we have to lose him.  He was just wonderful to set up the website for our class and in keeping us all advised about our classmates, etc.  I don't know of anyone that could have done it better.  Cherie Clabaugh

I called several days ago and talked with Bob's ex wife. It did not sound good. I also downloaded the NCHS web page and stored it just incase we lose it. -- Darrell Fritts

Thanks, Marvin, for your friendship and support to Bob and for keeping us informed.  My prayers continue, . . . . . Pat Tripeny

Thanks, Marvin, for keeping all fo us informed............Nancy Stewart Lubnau

If he can hear you please tell him my prayers are with him -- Fawnea Bacus

It is indeed sad to lose a classmate.   He was indeed a talented person who helped us all share our classmates in a closer way in these times of technology and helped to bring us all closer  together.  Thanks for keeping us informed.  May there always be a reunion in heaven of l95l classmates.  With sadness, Barbara Bemis Ogden

So I get from you another eloquent but sadly unanswerable message.  Please continue your work.  You have been a great communicator.  I’m sending a bunch of hugs to distribute when you see weeping.  They will arrive as easily and plentiful as the down of a thistle or a feather in the wind – memories that warm your spirit.  I lack words for beloved and befriended family members, - I guess I lack a lot, Please convey my best wishes.

And :  Bob and Alan are speaking in my head. :  I hear ... “be sure to hear music, take care of yourself, we’ll help you stay positive.”  I think I hear    laughter I guess.   like a party ---

I’ll let you go – I just realized I awoke a little after one AM, fresh and restored.  Now I suddenly feel I can go back to bed.  Goodnight, rest easy, hug

Sniff flowers

Touch with wonder and tenderness

Treasure emotions

Share a bit of bad to balance your bits of good

Make your seven mistakes a day

Rest easy “with the rhythm of a heartbeat”

I guess they are still talking -  oh --  every mistake opens a door, like a key, into new wisdom  I guess like “now I know how to avoid that problem again”  I guess I can go along with that  It sounds like an easy way to learn – maybe keep my brain sharp and appreciative.  “bit of bad”  hmm

Love. Alice Alexander

Friends,

There will be an informal memorial service for Barefoot Bob led my Preacher Mike this coming Saturday.  Everyone is invited but no one should feel obligated.  Even those of you unfortunate enough not to have the gift of alcoholism and its recovery are welcome!  Anyone who would like to will be invited to say a few words.  This is a chance for all of us to share some stories, inspiration, laughter, maybe some tears and celebrate a life lived to the fullest, dedicated to service of others and the desire to experience everything this world has to offer.

Saturday February 7th, 2009

1:30PM

Alano Fellowship Hall

520 E Best Ave

Coeur D Alene, ID  83814-3700

Some of you live far away or have circumstances that will make it hard or impossible to join us.  Please know you will all be with us in spirit!  Another, larger memorial service is scheduled for the last Saturday in June, 2009 in Post Falls, Idaho.  Details will come later.

Please do not come too early out of respect for the scheduled noon AA meeting that gets out at 1pm.  We do not want to disturb the meeting - thanks!

See you all soon,

YES, I consider it an honor. Aleta forwarded your messege to me also. I will do as I've been asked. I will also make sure to mention Janice's memorial this summer. If there is anything else please don't hesitate to ask. I've already told people that it would kind of an unorthodox service, but that's OK because Bob's beliefs were not exactly orthodox. Everyone agreed and are OK with that. I'll probably keep it real simple, I'll pray and say a little about Bob then open it up for those who have something to share then close with prayer. How's that sound?....mike

Thank you Andreas,

Bob is now in the hands of spirit.

Mike & Donna Heit

This last May Bob came to visit us at the missile site; he was fascinated by the facility. He drove from Post Falls all the way out to our home here in Harrington and from here to the site. The total round trip mileage would have been 185 miles or more, but that never seemed to be a problem with Bob.  I gave him his last haircut and trimmed his beard for him last week; in his characteristic manner he quipped “this trim ought to be so good it’ll last me for the rest of my life.” He was right as usual.

It was a beautiful sunny day in May, he was feeling good except for some back pain, but Bob was not one to comment much about his health other than an occasional request for an aspirin or two. My wife made him a homemade peach pie that day; he ate a really hearty meal. I’d like to think that he still loves peach pie now as much as he did then.

Please consider donating from time to time to maintain the website he built. [Editorial note: donations not currently required - thanks!] It is and will always be a true treasure for those who wish to research the Constitution, any information about AA, or the million of other things Bob found fascinating and tried to share with others. There is a link on the site to donate, it costs almost a hundred dollars a month at this time to maintain the site, hopefully we’ll be able to reduce that somewhat in the near future, I am going to be posting my journeys in the Excalibur aircraft I am building, Bob was fascinated with it and talked with me at length about the adventure. He really wanted to come along, so I have his memory to take with me. The bird has been named “Barefoot Windwalker” in memory of him. We’re going to have a great adventure he & I … and you too when you read the posts I’ll be making to the site.

So, that said, here’s to you my dear friend. When others gave up on me you didn’t. It’s you & me, into the blue off on another adventure.

He was a veteran and he served in Korea, and is that correct ??  Army for him, right ??

Sorry to hear about Bob's passing.  He died sober, which is a goal for most of us.

After giving back SO much to AA and leading the way, may he rest in peace.

Thanks for the final update on Bob.  I guess you sent this to all of the classmates, if not let me know and I will forward it to all I have.  Thanks again and Bob will always be thought of by me with complete wonder as how he accomplished so much and what really made him tick.

He was truly one of a kind,

Thank you for keeping us all up to date on Bob, and for all your work on his, and our behalf.  I’m glad Bob’s suffering has ended, and thank God for leading me to him via his wonderful web site.  Is someone going to keep the site going?

Hi all,

Unc left us all a lot to remember at three this morning. I know I will miss him. Please know in the end he only wanted to make every ones life better and give us the guidance we requested.

I was already missing him two weeks ago! It was nice to be able to just look up from my desk and say Hey Unc what do you think about this or that. Only a few times did I ever get "hell I don't know". Even then He would spend the time that he had free to come up with an answer in his own time.

So smile with me when you think of him.

Love Tony

It is Saturday morning at 3:20am (Pacific Standard Time).  Janice just called from the hospital to inform me that Bob has passed away.  In his own special way he touched all our lives and we loved him for it.  His work is done.

Dear Andreas;

I am so sorry to hear about Bob. I have been on his web site many times and am also hoping that his site will be kept going like Aron Russos was. Bob will be missed tremendously with all the hard work he has done to keep the patriot community informed.

Bob will be in my prayers daily and I know that God will reward him greatly when he takes him home!  Please pass on my condolences to his family for me and please keep me informed about him.

God Bless Always,

Andreas,

my heart goes out to you especially, the one who sees the balance of suffering, the need to communicate, entwined with both hope and sorrow.  I believe – no – I know from experience that a coma patient does hear you.  Each tenderness you give, each laughter and concerned touch seem to hold an energy level that transmits.  They transmit back at a level which your body does not process as noticeably as sight, touch, hearing, tasting or smell – a bee is prepared by nature to receive ultra-violet light – humans are not equipped for ultra-violet or telepathy, and it goes through subtler channels.  You’ll get his overwhelming sensations of freedom from pain and restriction, and from great memories he chooses to express at your most vulnerable moments, those just before you go to sleep and begin to visualize.  Stay open and enjoy the blessings.  Even bad memories will get justified this way.  Pay attention without resisting the input.  My love goes out to you...take it.  The big word “sharing” covers the little words “give” and “take”  so you must take, even if when you want to give.  I am sending hugs to all, including one to God, who knows best.  You understand.  And I admire you for that.  Thank YOU for these painful updates.

Love, Alice Alexander

Hi Everyone,

Even though this is a long update, there really is not much left to tell in this story.  Bob is basically unresponsive although I am certain he can still recognize visitors.  When I took hold of his hands and said, "Bob" a few times, he opened his eyes and said my name but then falls right back to sleep.  He has not been functionally conscious since early this week.

I held Bob's hands and passed on the latest round of messages, letters and greetings from all around the globe.  Somewhere deep inside I hope and wish he heard everything everyone had to say but I just don't know anymore.  There simply is not much of what was once Barefoot Bob left in him.  He has started shaking and twitching but nursing staff is keeping him calm with Ativan which seems to help quite a bit and keeps him asleep.  He has not had anything to eat or drink for days now and he is shrinking every time I see him.  When I talked to him a few days ago he said he was ready to go and I cannot image him staying around much longer.

But Bob's story may not be over yet and anyone who knows Bob has to admit that the following crazy idea might just keep him alive for a while longer:  If Bob can hang in there long enough to collect his next social security check, there will be money to finish some much needed repairs to his old Ford Model-T.  It would also get him his 35 year AA medallion.  Who knows but it brought some much needed comic relief to those of us visiting at the time.

As always, Bob is surrounded by friends and family and a lot of love.  Please feel free to visit his bedside or call his room and talk to Janice or whoever is visiting at the time.  Just do not expect Bob to be able to speak on the phone or respond or react to your visit.  As I said, I am sure he will know you are there but the time for a response has come and gone.  Quite a few people have been asking me for his phone number and address so here they are again:

SpokaneVAMedicalCenter

Room 155C

4815 North Assembly Street
Spokane, WA99205

This is in the hospice (nursing home) wing.  Park behind the hospital in the lower parking lot and enter into the single story building, not the tall hospital building itself.  Go through the double automatic doors and hang a right.  At the nurse's station, take another right.  Go to the end of the hall and take a left.  The room has his name on it (R. Hardison).

You can also call his hospital room directly at XXX-XXX-XXXX.

Thanks and have a great day,

Andreas

Andreas,

God Bless you for being there with Bob and standing with him like you have. When a person is severely drugged, it is correct that they can hear and know what is going on, but like being in a drunken stupor it is hard to retain what is reality and what is imagination.  When you are on such high amounts of morphine as Bob is, he isn't responsive because it shuts his nerves down that control everything that is why he doesn't feel the pain.  I have been through what you are going through and depending on what kind of care Bob asked for when he can't respond will depend on how long he is able to keep fighting this battle.  One of our AA friends got so bad, even if you sat on the edge of the bed next to him he would scream in pain. I found this out by accident. Every nerve in his body was in pain, and he too had brain cancer. Just watch for this.  One of the most important things that I have learned with the end of life, is that our loved ones need to have our permission to go ahead and let go, to leave us behind. I gave Bob my permission when I saw him last, and asked him to come and see me when he got to the other side so I knew he had arrived. I have no doubt that he will. Each of my loved ones that I was able to love and give them permission to go passed away in just a few days.

Andreas you are celebrating with Bob, his full circle of life, birth has to be painful, only we don't remember it, so death seems to be also. Death is a part of life, and what you do in the middle is what is important.  Just so you know, not only has Bob been a great friend, counselor and dad when I needed one, but you also have been a good friend. Although I don't see you often, I know my heart is safe with you. In my book that means the world to me. Tell Maureen I love her too, and please continue to keep me posted.

Love,

Billie

Dear Andreas,

So sorry to hear about the deterioration of Bob's condition. Yes, it is true that people are aware while in a coma, I have witnessed this twice. It is also good that he is no longer in pain and surely God will be merciful and not let him linger. He has given those around him time to absorb the circumstances and time to assure him that he was not alone. It is sad and none of us want to see dear ones leave us, but the fact is that this is what we are doing from the day that we are born. From what I know it sounds like he used his days wisely.

Bless you for being there. Please keep me informed.

Bob and I were never real good friends, but I have appreciated it so much all the work he has done for the class of 1951.  I can somewhat understand what he is going through.  You can tell him I went through three bouts of kidney and bladder cancer starting when we lived in northern California about 17 years ago.  I sort of hate to tell people about that, because somehow, miraculously, I pulled through.  I am one of the lucky ones and I wish that could happen for Bob.  Please tell him I am thinking about him and am praying for him not to suffer too much.  My husband, Bill, and I are both still working.  He as an engineer with his own firm and I work as a realtor.  Have had that profession both in California and Wyoming - 25 years.  I keep doing it because I feel blessed to be able to.

Give my love to Bob.

Hi Everyone,

Bob has had a slow but steady decline since last Friday.  On Monday I was still able to enjoy spending some time with him alone where we had a nice conversation for over an hour during which he received several phone calls from his high school classmates.  Unfortunately, that time may have come to an end.  Today he was barely able to acknowledge my presence at his bedside.  His ex-wife, Janice, told me he was a little bit more alert later in the afternoon when his nephew, Tony, stopped by to take care of some last minute details that needed to be addressed.

After Tony's visit, at Bob's request, the medical staff finally put in the morophine/Ativan IV drip thereby alleviating his considerable pain but at the same time, inducing a coma.  Quite a few people have told me that people in Bob's condition can still hear and can be aware of a persons presence after a coma has been induced.  But they are no longer able to respond.  In the hopes that what they say is true, I will visit Bob again on Friday and pass along another update to all of you.

I am very glad that Bob's pain has been removed but at the same time, I am shocked at how far down hill he has gone in two short days since we talked on Monday.  Our conversation may have been a last parting gift from Bob's higher power, Charlie.  Only God knows what the near future will bring so I will close by adding that I am very grateful for the time I was able to spend with Bob as I am sure all of you are also.  The countless messages, emails and letters all of you have sent make it clear how many people's lives Barefoot was able to touch during his time with us and have shown me more of his life than I would otherwise have experienced.  That too is a gift!

Thanks for everything... I'll keep you posted,

Andreas

We want to you to know how proud we are to be among those who have shared with you the many memories of our few short years as high school classmates.  As the years passed, we all have  pursued our own destinies.  The "herd" is somewhat smaller now, but we remember well those who have left.  As you know, Lola and I are married classmates. We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary on June 1. 2008.  We are so grateful for the memories of our high school days that we share.  We have never missed a reunion.  Thank you for all you have done to help organize them.  We are especially grateful for the NCHS Class of 51 website that you created; and all of the timely emails keeping us up to date.  God bless you; 'til we meet again.  And, we will!!

Hi, I am Pat Mosher Frost class of 51. I was so sorry to hear about Bob and wish you to tell him I contacted you and send my prayers. The communication he set up for our class is absolutely the best and sometimes when I am feeling lost for Wy (Wyoming) I bring it up just to remember the fun days. I live in Royce City TX, moved to Dallas in 1961 and then Garland, TX and then Winnsboro, TX and then Bowie, TX. I inherited my Grandmother's house in 1985 and moved back and totally redid it, stayed two years and I guess you just can't go back home. Moved back to Dallas and my old job, 20 years with the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in pathology and retired in 1998. In 2002 I sold my Dallas home and bought in a little rural town of Royce City, now it is 9000 people, so much for country and vegie gardens. I have had a good life and a real downer at times. Like Bob I had cancer when I was 30 and I guess what saved me was the Dr. dropped dead at his desk six weeks later and so I never had radiation, at that time they cooked everything in the vicinity. 1997 again I had a scare and they took the bottom lobe of my left lung. Surprise, it was a fungus of the kind of San Joaquin, Ca. And here I am so sad about Bob. May God love a duck and keep him safe. I have not been  back to Casper since the 40th reunion and will probably never go back again. The one friend I had kept up with since 8th grade and I had a conversation after the 55th  and I decided that she was being snobbish in her attitude about some of our classmates, though I was not close friends with this classmate I resented what she said. Bob what did you do to piss her off so? Hey, she needed it and congrats and I hope she now feels like doo-doo  Andreas, I am so glad he has someone close give him a hug and tell him I am thinking about him and please keep me in  touch.

Thank you for the info.  Bob's younger brother emailed me a couple of days ago and I notified all of the classmates that I had emails addresses for.  Let Bob know that he is in all of our prayers.  He has experienced so many different adventures in his life and I have tried to keep up with them as they were posted on his website as I know many of the other classmates have.  I don't have the expertise to step up and keep the Class of 51 pages up to date etc. but I certainly hope someone with the knowledge and know how steps up and takes  it over.  It isn't any small task but Bob did it without any complaints and certainly didn't get all of the thanks or appreciation that we have all felt and enjoyed through the years.  I have heard back from a few of the classmates thanking me for forwarding his bothers email and all have expressed how much Bob is in their prayers.  Please let him know.  I will forward your email onto all of the classmates that I sent the other to and if they get it twice it won't hurt. I tried to call Bob a few minutes ago but no answer, I will try again later.  Been out shoveling snow here in Fort Collins, Colorado this AM.

Hi Everyone,

I stopped by to visit Bob again today.  He was not doing nearly as well as last week.  He was tired and in pain.  He thought he had over done it a bit in the last few days.  Nevertheless, we had a nice talk, I read him all the messages and emails and even the pile of snail mail he had received.  No one else was there while I visited and I enjoyed having Bob to myself for a little while.  He did, however, receive several phone calls from his classmates from high school, the ’51 Mustangs from Casper Wyoming.  As always, he listened to the news from friends and family members very intently and filled me in with several stories and adventures about each person who wrote.  He is still very anxious to hear from all of you so keep it coming!

Again, if you have trouble reaching Bob by phone, please keep trying.  Sometimes he simply can’t reach the phone or is too weak to talk or has no one to help him.  A few hours later, he may be in better shape and able to talk again.  Your perseverance is appreciated!

Hopefully I remembered this just as Bob said it!  He asked me to pass on the following:  “Tell all them suckers I love ‘em… all them crazy bastards!”

Have a great day and thanks for all you folks have done to keep Bob in good spirits,

Andreas

Bob:

Sorry to hear you're having such a tough row now.  You've been such a wonderful and exciting member of our class!  Loved our visit a few years ago at our farm in Patterson, Ca.  Was such a surprise to see you wheel in our drive.

We sold that place, moved back to Casper to be with ailing fathers.  Three years ago they both passed so we are out and about once again.  We bought a winter home in Fountain Hills, AZ; spend 6 mos there and 6 mos in Casper.  Also do loads of traveling.  Went to Greece and Germany last Fall and plan to wander around somewhere this year.

Do know you've contributed so much to all of us with your wonderful work for the class AND your positive outlook and funnies.

Love and Prayers

Hi Andreas -

Bob used to have this slide show out on his site, but it no longer seems to be there.  I'm passing it along in hopes possibly you would know how to post it on our FIR board, or show to Bob on a laptop if he'd like or let Janice see it.  Bob spent about 3 weeks here a year and a half ago while driving his T around the county.  It broke down near here and he fixed the whole thing right here in my driveway!

I'll always treasure that time we spent together

Dear Bob,

Just wanted you to know you are in my thoughts and prayers.  You have been on many journeys during your lifetime...now you are facing life's final journey. I hope you are at peace with your Maker as you walk this path. You truly illustrate the saying that you want to slide in at the end of life saying "Wow, what a ride!" God bless you and comfort all those who love you. Thank you so much for all the work you have done rounding up the Mustangs from NCHS. Sorry I don't know enough about websites to do any good there. Sure hope someone will come forward and continue the good work you have started. It's only two years until our 60th class reunion will be upon us!All Hail to Casper High School...N-C-H-S!!! and to Barefoot Bob who brings us together through the internet.

Loving thoughts,

Hi, Bob,

Marvin McKinley emailed us advising that you have entered hospice care.  Larry and I are thinking of you and want you to know we think of you as one of our most amazing classmates.  You not only imagined adventures--you pursued them.  You have kept your NCHS Class of '51 connected in a very special way.  Thank you, Barefoot--smooth sailing, safe landing--you are, indeed, one of a kind.

Hi Andreas,

I have been kept up to date on Bob's set backs and recoveries by Tim Hunt. I am glad to hear that Charlie is in charge and not Bob. A day at a time is something I learned to do very slowly in AA; but it always works. I have been in Los Angeles working since December 2007; and I miss seeing Bob from time to time at the Rathdrum "Dogs" meetings and occasionally at the CDA Alano Club.

Bob,

thank you for being a real alcoholic, and sharing your experience Strength and hope with me; as it has helped me many times to shatter this ego that is trying to get me drunk.

God is, and I am not. I re-read the story of Grandfather and the Windwalker yesterday. Amen.

Dave

Bob,

I want to thank you for all you’ve done for me by way of your wonderful web site.  I would often visit “Barefoot’s World” while I was still drinking, and would find hope that someday I might find what you so joyfully talked about.  After my wife was diagnosed with cirrhosis and completed rehab we joined AA.  That was over three years ago, we are still very sober and love life, and each other, fully, one day at a time.

Now, in sobriety I use your site to further my understanding of our disease and how to best fight it.  Between the articles you’ve gathered and those you’ve written you have created a treasure trove of wonderful, inspiring, God directed, works.  I’ll be forever grateful.

I also joined FIR, but didn’t participate very often.  But I have gotten to know Bill Kist pretty well, and even sent him a cutting from the Pass It On Plant, which is from the plant that was besides Bill W’s bed when he died.  Bill wrote and told me about your condition.

I immediately signed on to FIR and read everything that was posted, and I was shocked.  The last I’d heard you were doing fine.  I am very sorry to hear about the most recent events, and you have been in my prayers, all day today, and I will continue to pray that God’s will be done in your life, and thank Him for leading me to you so many years ago.

I just read that you have rebounded some.  That’s wonderful news.  There are a lot of people praying for you Bob, perhaps there are still a couple of drunks that need you to show them the way into the Fellowship.

May God bless and keep you,

Mike

Hi Everyone,

Good news!  This is an update I never expected to make after last night but am very grateful for!  Bob has perked up today and the medical staff has put off inducing a coma until he asks for it again.  I stopped by the hospital at Bob’s former wife’s, Janice, request during my lunch break at work.  Last night Janice and I were really wondering if Bob would make it through the night.  What a difference a day makes!  It looks like Bob’s higher power, Charlie, is not quite done with him yet.

While I was there about a half dozen people stopped by to visit Bob.  Janice told me more are on the way through this coming weekend since their trip to the Omak Roundup has been canceled.  Bob visited quietly but eagerly with everyone and was happy to have them there.

Bob’s turnaround today puts the phrases, “One day at a time” and “Life on life’s terms” into perspective for me.  Please keep the emails, phone calls and posts coming!  I will take another batch over to him tomorrow evening to read to him.

Have a great day,

Andreas

Andreas,

Thank you for loving on Bob and the rest of us these past few days. Thank you for that. Barefoot grabbed ahold of my hand when I reached out via the internet here at FIR in March or April of 1996. God only knows how many he touched prior to and after our first meeting then. I tried calling him the day before yesterday and nobody answered. Sure would have liked to have said hello to wish him peace. I will miss him tremendously.

Hi Everyone,

First of all, thanks to Frank for your phone call at a critical moment when I really needed some support!  Your timing, when I had just left the hospice this evening, was perfect.

I have good news and bad news – although nothing really seems like good news right now.  The good news is that Bob had a conversation this evening with his higher power, Charlie, and told him he was ready to go.  Everything Bob wants taken care of has been arranged for or handled and he is at peace.

The bad news is that Bob’s pain is such that he has opted to be put on a machine that will run morphine and Ativan though him at all times but will keep him pain free.  This will basically induce a coma and put him to sleep until he passes on.  Bob is fully aware of what this means for him.  He was supposed to be put on this machine this evening but the doctor did not get the order in on time.  The machine will be brought in the morning.  Bob was awake for a longer period of time during my visit and passed on some instructions for the maintenance of his website: www.barefootsworld.net.  We were also able to say a few of the things that friends say to each other in these situations even though the words seemed hollow and meaningless at the same time.  I must admit it was difficult since it could very well have been my last conversation with him.  The doctors say it is unlikely he will be awake much, if at all, once the machine is in place.

As of approximately 4pm (Pacific Standard Time),  all messages I have received via telephone and email as well as all posts on www.friendsinrecovery.org have been read and passed on to Barefoot.  He listened very closely while I read him everything.  He knows he is loved by all of you and that you are all praying for him.  When I finished, he asked me to ask all of you to read “Windwalker Listens” on his website.  Both the link and the text are below.  This, he said, is his final message to “the tribe”, all his friends around the world.  He also asked that I send his love to all of you.

I would also like to add my thanks for all of your support during this difficult time!

Let’s all keep our good friend, Barefoot Bob, in our prayers.

Thanks,

Andreas

Hi Everyone,

With a bit of luck, Barefoot should have a broadband internet connection by 6pm (Pacific Standard Time) tonight.  Hopefully you will all get an update from him directly in the very near future.

[Editorial note: We got all the equipment needed to get Bob back online but he was no longer in any shape to do so]

Have a great day,

Tim,

Kirby, Dutch and I went and saw Barefoot this afternoon. I met his daughter Susan and spent some time with her alone so she had someone to talk to also.  I gave her my phone number and e-mail so that she could contact me if she needed or wanted. She said the parade of people that had come to see him, really helped her to understand her dad much better and she was amazed by the people that he had helped.  Bob was doing pretty darn well!

He was in his wheel chair a bunch and we went and smoked and hung out for a while. He had eaten well, and ate while we were there.  He finally got a dose of morphine and he kind of chilled out a little. He is as sharp as can be even on the pain meds.  He doesnt want to have confusion and is worried about that.  His daughter tape recorded some of the conversation and I hope that it is possible to somehow get copies of Bobs message he shared when I asked him what the most beautiful place he had ever seen was. He shared a bunch of different places, but he also said every where is beautiful, and everyone, depending how I choose to see it. I hope I never forget that message and the feeling that is behind it.   Please forward this on, if you like, I give you my permission.

Love

Billie

Barefoot, was one of the people who kept me screwed down to the ground for most of my first 5 years of recovery. I have known him for over 20 years now. I have already lost many of my mentors in my early sobriety. This soldier will be another great loss for AA.  My original sponsor passed away from cancer two years ago, and it about killed me when they played taps for him.  If it wasn't for the old boys in this program I would not be sober.  I had a connection with one woman, but it has been the AA men in my life that have helped me through the toughest times.  I know us girls are supposed to stick together, but most of the women I just don't connect with.  (Could I be a guy in a women's body and don't know it?)

Hi Everyone,

We had a very nice 2.5 hour long AA meeting with Bob on Saturday with about a dozen people attending.  Several of his sponsees were there.  It was very intimate with lots of laughter and tears.  Bob participated very actively and listened intently to everything everyone had to say in spite of his pain medication which sometimes puts him to sleep.

Afterwards, he had a nice lunch followed by more family visits.  As usual. he is keeping a very busy schedule!  Several of us are planning to meet up at his bedside on Monday night around 5pm. Maybe another AA meeting will break out.

Getting Bob's computer setup will take a few days still but I think we have a good solution to get him a cellular broadband internet connection.  It seems the reception in his room is fairly good so now all we need is the hardware and the service plan.

That's the news!

Have a great day,

Andreas

Hi Folks,

Hopefully this will be my last update on Bob!  It looks like as soon as we figure out how to get him an internet connection, he can post his own updates again.

Bob has been moved from the hospital wing to the hospice wing of the VA Medical center.  His new, long term, direct address is as follows:

Bob Hardison

SpokaneVAMedicalCenter

Room 155

4815 N. Assembly Street
Spokane,  WA  99205-6197

His bedside phone number is: 509-434-7850

He told me that he has been completely pain free since yesterday, has eaten three full meals by mouth (not via the feeding tube!) and that the doctors have given him about six months.  He is in good spirits and has made tremendous improvements in the last 48 hours.  His home group is planning to bring a meeting to his room once a week and he is already seeking other friends of Bill W. in hospice to startup a local meeting while he is there.  Bob has opted to stay in Spokane instead of being relocated to Coeur d'Alene or PostFalls.  He is anxious to get his computer up and running at his bedside so he can communicate with all of you and his other his friends and family directly again as soon as possible.  Obviously Bob's higher power still has plans for him!  This includes attending the Omak Roundup next weekend:

11th AnnualOkanoganValley Winter Roundup

January 23-25, 2009

Elks Lodge

110 S Ash Street

Omak, WA

Now you'all have all the information I have available, along with the latest update, all in one place.  If there is anything I can do for any of you, please feel free to contact me directly:

I am relieved and gladdened by the Bob I spoke to this evening compared to two days ago!  There is no lack of gratitude in my life today!!!  And I must admit I am being purely selfish right now.

Have a great weekend,

Andreas

To all the friends of Barefoot Bob:

This is not a direct quote but it is as close as I can remember it after an hour and a half drive home from the VA Hospital in Spokane:  Barefoot Bob says to tell everyone that “The old man is hanging in there and so can they.  All we all have to do is not pick up that first drink.”  I suppose if he can handle his reoccurring lung cancer and secondary brain tumors, a feeding tube in his stomach, several IVs and a small collection of machines keeping him going, one day at a time, we can all handle staying sober today also!

Here is a bit of what is going on:  A year ago, Bob had a lung removed due to lung cancer.  In September, he had a golf ball sized tumor removed from the back of his head.  Since that time, he has had terrible head aches.  A month ago, during a checkup, he had a CT scan and was declared cancer free.  Now, his lung cancer has returned in his remaining lung and he had at least one more tumor, far larger than the last one in the back of his head.  There could be more but more tests are needed.  He has a feeding tube so he no longer needs to eat, which has been a problem for the last month.  He has had trouble eating and keeping down what he was able to eat.  There is some talk of him being transferred to Hospice soon so he will be around a little longer than first expected.  There was some mention of up to 6 months as a possibility.

As for his disposition, mentally and emotionally, he is very sharp and alert.  He is in good spirits considering his circumstances and the AA quotes and Big Book fraises just keep coming.  He wants very much to attend an upcoming AA roundup and is making plans to do so.  He also wants to see his anniversary in about one month.  In spite of everything, he still has ambitions!  Bob gets many visitors, both friends and family, during the day.

Bob’s direct phone number in his hospital room is XXX-XXX-XXXX (Pacific Standard Time).  Please feel free to call him directly – he would love to hear from any and all of you.  His ex-wife, Janice, may answer the phone and pass you on to Bob.  She is a wonderful lady who is making sure Bob has everything he needs at all times.  Sometimes it is hard to reach Bob, such as when he is sleeping or out of his room having tests or other procedures done.  You may have to try several times before you reach him successfully.  Do not be discouraged!

Thanks to Manfred for keeping you all updated until I got my act together and joined FiR to post my own messages.

Bob sends his love to all of you!

Thanks and have a great day,

Andreas
