Beautiful clear morning, 50s, calm. New Year'a Day, Saturday I was with Tony and Nancy K. and Donny for breakfast then to the Amelia Island 11am meeting after which Ed and Donny brought me back to St. Augustine about 1pm. I went to the Post Office then to the boat. Sunday I pumped the Resurrection again and towed the WMD away from the salvaged Blew Star and back to the dock so that Ormond could work on it, internet, PO, Walmart, Target and Kmart looking for a new bicycke headlite, to club for 5:30 and back to the boat after dark. Today I have spent cleaning cabin in prep of haulout Wednesday. To town about 2pm to call the boatyard, PO, Internet, meeting, etc. Spyder doing OK, but new gastroentrologist has found a deep seated viral complication. She is in good spirits. Back on board at 7:45.

A little foggy, calm. Left early, pumped Resurrection dry, to town. Breakfast, P.O., to COA, gave Debbie an autorun disk of Barefoot's World, sent one to Casey's solicitor in Brighton, UK. via global express mail. Returned to boat, hauled anchor and moved down the ICW to the San Sebastian River and to the St. Augustine boatyard. Tied up at 1:45 for the night ready for haulout tomorrow. Dinghyed back to city dock, Debbie picked me up and we took Danny's clothes and gear to him at Mental Health in Jacksonville. Got back about 9, put the bicycle in the dinghy and motored back to the yard in the dark, hanging on a shoal at low tide. Had to get out of the dinghy and walk it to deeper water, a hundred or so feet. Soaked to the knees. On board at 10pm.

Docked
Calm, 50s, clear. Ready to haul on the slack of high tide about 2:30pm. Went to town, the usual. At 1:15 the yard management informed me they did not want to take the possible liability of hauling with their equipment as it might colapse the hulls. Damn, they could have told me that 2 months ago. Need to find a yard with a marine rail. Held over for the night at their dook, as their manager is trying to find a solution that is within reach.

COA, internet, phone, located a boat yard that says they can haul the boat, 60 miles north, Amelia Island Yacht Basin. Will move there the first of the week. Went to meeting with Spyder.

Calm, flat, 50s. Part Clear. People in office helped me find yard with rail to pull me, St. Marys Boat Yard in Georgia about 6 hours away across Cumberland Sound, up the St Marys River, and up the North River about 3 meandering miles against fast tide and wind, dark about a mile from yard so I anchored mid-river. Slow trip watching out for shoals.

Going to cost $750 to crane in and out, $25/day on the hard, plus costs of repairs.

0715, calm, cold high 30s, clpudy. Feeling poorly this morning, back pains and feel weak. Hauled boat and on the hard at 10:20. Rudder stock bent about 25°. Pressure washing shows some small delamination on the bows of the amas from working in the marsh. Barnacles not bad. Discussed damages and repairs with Roger, gave him $1000 deposit. Vacuumed bilges, about 20 gallons. Will have to take tanks out and refit as necessary and scrub bilges of the mud. Cleared after hold enough to remove rudder. Rudder collar came loose hard, but rudder was out in an hour and a half and photographed about 1500. Borrowed a battery charger to trickle charge the batteries. Went to town for Wed men's meeting.
Thur Jan 27

Boat Yard0645, calm, foggy, 40s. Removed tanks and cleaned mud from bilges and dried them. Roger took rudder to mashine shop. Went to Ken's and showered. Busy, dirty day, but a pleasant evening.

0645, breezy, cold and biting, overcast, 40s. Cleaned outside of tanks, flushed mud from inside them, and de-contaminated with clorine. Copper tank fittings had corroded through from electrolysis. Went to town with Ken for breakfast, picked up the replacement plastic fittings, new stainless clamps, and new water suction hose, $24. Installed all new hoses, ready to iinstall tanks tomorrow. Roger said rudder stock can be straightened.

0730, calm, overcast, 40s. Restless night, up and awake 3 times. Sore and stiff this morning. Aspirin helped. Installed 2 tanks. No. 1 tank is leaking from an electrolysis pinhole, needs welding. It takes an hour and a half each tank to install and plumb. Stalled out on tanks. Worked at getting mast samson post shimmed up, it shrunk another 1/4 inch drying out this past year. Need to make a 5/16 HDpoly shim. Drizzled all day and rained hard from suundown to midnight. Watched movies--again.

0730, calm, overcast, high 40s. Insomnia, 0300 before I finally slept. Feel strung out this morning. Light drizzle. Took Ken out to his boat. Part filled two tanks I had partially hooked up. Leaking -- damnation -- took them out to be pressure tested and repaired. Ken has shop and radial arm saw to build the new hatch covers. Went to Hewling meeting with Ken and Rachel.

0715, calm, overcast, high 40s. Decided ato replace tanks with flexible bladder tanks as more cost effective than patching stainless tanks. Ken helped me intall 13/16 thick mast step shim which closred the gap. Plugged seepage holes into tankage bilges and relocated bilge pump aft one station, ready to install bladder tanks. Keel joint still not dried out. Picked up around area. Rudder is repaired nicely. Fitted oarlocks to oars for the dinghy. Mon night meeting with Ken.

0630, calm, overcast, raining, high 40s. Sanded covers, ready to glass by noon. Obtained glass and resin about 1400, but cold rain and high humidity stopped the glassing. Cleaned up shop, returned to boat and hunkered down to wait it out. Rained most of the night.

0715, calm, overcast, foggy high 40s. Helped Ken move the book cases he has been varnishing to his mother-in-laws. Glassed one cover by noon. Resin is slow setting in this weather even with a heatlamp. Bladder water tanks came. Finished glassing 3 of the covers.

0645, calm, clear, high 30s. Brought covers to boat to finish curing in the sun. Warmer today, 60s. Finally got the tank fittings sealed with silicone and back in place. Fixed companionway hatch. Went to Yuling meeting with Ken and Rachel. At 2300 the neighbor in the cradle, Steve and Marilyn, knocked. Their new inflatable had drifted loose on the tide and was gone. We looked for it in my diinghy until about 0100, and then gave up until first light.
Mon Feb 7

Boat Yard

0630, calm, clear, 40s. Steve knocked at first light, to the dinghy, across channel and found the inflatable in about 15 minutes in the reeds, back to dock in another 5, tied up and secured. Their ketch, Spray Venture, was launched, afloat and out of the cradle by 0900 and out to a mooring to complete work for a few days. They have been cruising the world since 1986, and are bound for Nova Scotia and Ireland later in the spring. Steve told me their average cost of cruising has been about $600/month including maintenance and "holidays." I tried filling the bladder tanks and fought fitting leaks the rest of the morning. Cleaned the barnacles and weeds from speed indicator turbine wheel and anti-fouled the sensor and wheel. The crane barge will be gone all this week, scheduled to return next week. Roger indicated that it would probably be a week Wednesday or Friday before I get back in the water. I made a rough guess estimate of costs and I think I will have some to spare saved from my SSI.
Tue Feb 8

Boat Yard

0600, calm, clear, 30s. Yesterday was a tired and frustrating day. Slept 9 hours, better today, but old bones kicked me out of bed early. Worked on new hatch covers until 1030, then dinghyed and bicycled to town to get hull paint and hardware for covers. Bicycled 8 miles each way to walmart, Ace and Farmers Building with no luck.

0815, calm, clear, 40s. Stiff and half sick this morning. Beatiful day after sunruse, 70s. Mounted hatch covers. Wired in new battery charger. Mable fiber glassed stbd side of keel, 2 layers of roving and 3 of mat alternating. Went to Hilliard meeting.

0630, calm, overcast, 62°. Slow start today. Cleared up by 0900, light cloud formation. Cleaned amas and sgowed gear, eliminating unneeded. Crane barge will move out tomorrow or Monday, returning in two weeks before I can get back in the water, about the end of the month.

0730, light breeze, clear, cold 30°, frost on deck. Most of the day spent cleaning, oiling and stowing tools after sun warmed up. Established and painted 4" higher boot line. 10kt breeze was chilling after 1600. Watched "Heidi" again, what a marvelous movie and story.

0630, light breeze, clear, 32°, light frost on deck. Made a wasted trip to town, Marine supply store closed and library computers were down. Did some paint prep work and took it easy the rest of the day.
Sun Feb 13

Boat Yard

0645, calm, high cirrus clouds, high 30s. Cleaned barnacles from prop and strut. Reshaped rudder sleeve where bent rudder stock had belled it and prepped it for repair. Prep sanded stbd main bottom for anti-fouling paint. While sanding I found another torsion crack about a foot and a half long on the keelson at the depth and speed transducers. At first I thought it was an oyster gouge. The marsh mud induced a tremendous strain on the boat as the tide and wind wracked it from side to side. I had to stop sanding before sunset as the paint dust had me sneezing constantly, and the tide was coming in under the area I was working.

0645, calm, cloudy, high 40s. Pleasant morning. Crane barge moved out at 0930 and I am on shore until it returns in about 2 weeks. Will give plenty of time to paint topsides. Mabel and Josh glassed porqt side of keel. I went to town and got topside paint, strap eues and bunge for hatches. Didn't find bungee or paint, except white-white gloss, and will get that Wed when Ken gets back. Back on board at 1730.

0800, calm, cloudy, high 50s. Was up a couple of hours in the middle of the night, slept late. Put new packing in the rudder gland and prepared to install rudder. Polished on the sextant. Epoxied my pipe and the split in the rudder gland lower end. Drawfiled burrs from rudder stock and fiberglassed bottom of rudder. Ken and Rachel got home from Kentucky.
Transposed Grandfather's quote from "Heidi" into the Ancient Wisdom page.
Grandfather says the Eagle taught him that,
"In all living beings there is a courage, a strengtn, a daring that we do not know we have until suddenly we need them. And then, when we find out we're no longer the cowards that we thought we were, our hearts and minds are open and eager for what you might call . . . . a miracle!"
"For all of us, Grandfather?"
"For All Of Us!!!"

Gave some of it to Ken, automatic pressure pump and lights. Stowed remainder. Fixed a good dinner and watched "Legends of the Fall".

0545, high overcast, light fog and breeze, high 50s.Refastened aluminum wear strip on stbd ama bow. Ground out the last of the fiberglass repairs. Josh scrubbed the deck and sides of hulls while I mixed paint. Waited until dry then taped and painted hulls. I bought twice too much paint, only used a gallon to do the hull sides. I gave Mabel the old sewing machine, another 50# out of the amas. Filled water tanks .... leaks apparently all stopped. Barge crane will be here about 0900 tomorrow and boat will be hoisted back into the water. Total of repairs including barge crane charges, $3236. Getting foggy at 1630. Went to Hilliard meeting with Ken and Rachel.

0600, high overcast, calm, high 50s. Downpour rained last night about 2230. Crane barge arrived at 0900 and the boat was back in the water by 1015, looking good. Took photos. Anchored in mid-channel at 1030, and had coffee. Checked thru-hull fittings and rudder gland, shaft seal, all secure and none leaking. Depth sounder not working correctly, glassed over must be affecting it or the new connections not making contact. Speed transducer working fine. Crane straps broke inboard trampoline rails, no biggie. Will make new ones in St. Augustine. Ken's 49th bday, went with them to Shoney's All You Can Eat BBQ and I did and I suffered.

0700, high overcast, light breeze, raining, high 50s. Went ashore to get Josh to help raise mast. He cranked it up in about 15 minutes. Took him ashore, walked to Ken's to check email and make a mast step shim. Visited with Steve and Marilyn Daly aboard the Spray Venture on the way back out, having tea and cookies and played 3 games of 3 handed cribage before returning to the boat at 1330. If the weather clears they will leave out tomorrow also. They are bound for Newfoundland and Ireland about the middle of May. Rain has remained constant all day, cold and snotty, nothing more done.

0630, raining, low 60s. On the bottom at low tide. Should lift off abouat 0730. Up anchor at 0745. Drizzling, water smooth, a very light breeze. Rain heavier and visibility iffy between channel day marks the last 15 miles. Had to wait 10 minutes for the Bridge of Lions to open. Anchored south of the bridge at 1145. Total soaked. Below and made coffee and into dry clothes. It has been constant rain all morning and looks to continue. Rain leak at mast step put a couple of quarts in the bilge. Watched movie until rain let up a bit about 1600. Wind had picked up so I installed bridle and emptied 15 gallons of rainwater from dinghy. Thought about going ashore but rain and wind hampered that.

0530, light breeze, cloudy, mid 50s. 11,323 days ago I first met Tex R., 31 years, and I became his friend and a friend of Bill W. A lot of remenising last night and this morning. I warmed the cabin with the galley stove and my thoughts. It is A Good Day To Remember.
Ran engine to charge battery while I bailed the dinghy, mounted the engine and readied to go ashore. Paid for dinghy dock, showered, did laundry, had breakfast. Went to COA to see Debbie D., she has a new job, checked email, updated web, went past Spyder's mom's place, not there, and got the last month's mail from the Post Office. Randy M. sent me a welcome 50. Spyder's mom Judy saw me riding up King street and ran me down at the club welcoming me back. Spyder made it to the last of the 1730 Happy Hour meeting. She has been ill with her MS and other complications this past month, but we had a good cry of Joy and a bunch of hugs. She gave me an anniversary gift of edible goodies. Charley D. came to the meeting to celebrate with me. Debbie D. is in Ft Lauderdale for job training and we couldn't reach her. Pedaled my butt back to the marina, got my laundry from the lounge, loaded the dinghy and was back aboard by 1945. It has been a wonderful loving lovely day. Thanks again, Charlie.
